Norval Morrisseau was an Aboriginal Canadian artist. He painted in an abstract style known as the woodlands style. He was self-taught and used different terms and styles than most other artists. He faced many challenges in his life, such as two years in a residential school and falling deathly ill at the age of 19. Morrisseau's art was deeply rooted in Aboriginal spirituality and traditions, and as such there was controversy over his art in the Aboriginal community. His art is characterized by thick back outlines and bright colours, as shown below:
